Bedrich Smetana, Composer
(1824 - 1884). Czech composer. Smetana created a nationalistic style of music through his operas, and is especially well known for his masterpiece - the symphonic cycle of tone poems entitled "My Country" (Ma Vlast). His String Quartet no 1 "From My Life" and his opera "The Bartered Bride" are important works in establishing a Czech national school.
