(1823-1892).  French composer.  Lalo studied at the conservatories in Lille and Paris, and with several private teachers. In addition to his early chamber works and songs, he composed for the stage, but had trouble finding an opera house that was interested in performing his works.  That he was first to succeed with instrumental works is remarkable, in that Parisian audiences were normally far more interested in opera.  Concert music was thought to be 'too German'.
