Charles Ives (1874-1954) was a pianist, organist and highly original and experimental composer of symphonic, chamber, vocal and choral works.  He is considered by many to be the first American composer of note, laying the foundation for most of the 20th century musical innovations through his use of polytonality, polyrhythm, tone clusters and quarter tones passed through a filter of 19th century romantic and nationalistic influences (including Beethoven, and Sousa and Stephen Foster).
