Amy Marcy Cheney Beach, Composer
(1867-1944). American composer and pianist. Also known as Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, she was concertizing as a pianist by the 1880's. Among her earliest works, her Mass in E flat major was the first work by a woman composer to be performed (1892) by Boston's Handel and Haydn Society. Soon after, the Boston Symphony performed a Symphony and Piano Concerto by her, with the composer as soloist.
