The song cycle “The Nursery” by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky was written between 1868 and 1872. Through brief, vivid scenes using unconventional and sometimes bizarre and even overwrought motifs, chords, and tonal materials, three young singers, a narrator, and a pianist transport us into the world as it is experienced by children. We encounter the nurse’s colorful adventure stories, a child playing with a doll, a hunt for an innocent beetle, a wild ride on a hobby-horse … Claude Debussy, himself a master at evoking the fantasy world of children, was deeply impressed by Mussorgsky’s musical picture-book: “The whole thing is a masterpiece.”
