Berliner Philharmoniker | Simon Rattle
Lucerne, Switzerland
Tuesday, 28 August 2012 - 7:30 PM
Presenter: Lucerne Festival
Conductor: Sir Simon Rattle
For this “summer of faith,” Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic bring us face to face with extraordinary states of a spiritual and emotional nature. The program begins with music made of shimmering patterns and textures as György Ligeti gives us a slice of resounding eternity in his “Atmosphères” and Richard Wagner opens up the heavens in his Prelude to “Lohengrin,” with its image of the Holy Grail hovering down to us from above. In contrast, Claude Debussy takes us into twilit regions in his “Jeux.” The composer himself spoke of “a mysterious evening landscape with this disquieting something that the dusk elicits.” Meanwhile, Finnish composer Sulho Ranta refers to the “shaman-like” musical language of Jean Sibelius: “Like a magic drum, it transports us into ecstasy.” And the final bacchanal of Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloé” will end the program in a blast of orgiastic noise–few can resist the exciting pull of this massive orchestral crescendo!
