LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA | Claudio Abbado | Radu Lupu
Lucerne, Switzerland
Friday, 17 August 2012 - 7:30 PM
Presenter: Lucerne Festival
Conductor: Claudio Abbado
Many leading Mahler conductors keep their distance when it comes to the symphonies of the Catholic visionary Anton Bruckner. But not Claudio Abbado: in recent summers, while developing his great Mahler cycle in Lucerne, he has also been programming works by this other composer of apocalyptic symphonies. Having conducted the Fourth, Fifth, and Seventh, this year he takes up the rarely heard First Symphony, which Bruckner himself nicknamed his “cheeky brat.” Indeed, in this early work from1865-66, written while he was still living in Linz, Bruckner’s unique musical language emerges in its most natural state. The composer had not yet had to take preemptive measures to counteract the hostility he would later encounter. This C minor Symphony astonishes with its extravagance of ideas, at times harsh contrasts, and overall character.
