It wasn’t until nearly half a year after Stalin’s death that Shostakovich broke free from artistic oppression, and released his Tenth Symphony. Shostakovich’s personal notes about the symphony are brief, saying that he wished "to portray human emotions and passions." Without significant clues from the composer, the world is left to speculate on his intentions.
