Who says this extraordinary ensemble can’t scramble when the necessity arises? I was fortunate enough to attend the Thursday evening concert at Zipper Hall, and was rocketed off on an unpremeditated musical adventure. Due to Catherine Leonard’s unfortunate illness, several scheduled works had to be put aside in favor of last-minute substitutions. As a result, the evening took on a different arc, with Artistic Director/flautist Adrian Spence doing a yeoman’s job on performances of the Duruflé work, the quickly added Poulenc flute sonata, and the Heggie Soliloquy. Warren Jones was an unshakable anchor at the piano, transitioning from style to style with warmth and sensitivity. Of course, all the musicians performed magnificently, from the charming Beethoven variations rendered by Ani Aznavoorian to the sparkling sonorities of the seldom-heard Duruflé work to the absolutely soul-grabbing Fauré c-minor Piano Quartet. The writing met the playing head-on, and the untrammeled passion of the work lasted from the first note to the last. It was impossible to believe that the piece had been a quick replacement for the Franck Piano Quintet. It may have been that the evening’s works caused a bit of heart-pounding pressure for the performers, but there was a totally different kind of heart-pounding for the audience: the emotional participation in experiencing a truly fabulous concert. Bravo!
