One may almost call it a beautiful tradition: the opening night concert of the Dresden Music Festival is also a podium for extraordinary young artists. With the energetic Curtis Symphony Orchestra from Philadelphia, one of the best young orchestras of the world presents itself in Dresden. Two high-carat artists, Ray Chen and Jan Vogler, are the soloists of this evening, which is dedicated to Johannes Brahms. In his last concerto, the Double Concerto, the composer demands a seamless unification of the solo instruments into one »huge eight-string violin«. Austria was Brahms’ second homeland, and, as he felt, a place where »melodies fly so thick and fast that you have to take care not to step on one!« Nowhere is this more obvious than in his Second Symphony, with which the gala concert for opening night at the Frauenkirche ends.
