There is no exact English translation for the word “Pathétique.” The whirl of emotions that Piotr Tchaikovsky suggests in his final Symphony range from giddy highs to hopeless lows, and audiences have been finding meaning in the sensitive immediacy of this work for over 100 years. Our assistant conductor Ken-David Masur opens this concert leading our second engagement this season with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante format, this time with two of our Strings principals sharing the spotlight.
