Day two of our fabulous China journey took us to Fuzhou, a major industrial city on the southeast coast, and capital of Fujian province. So much to recount.... The shuttle from the airport to downtown Fuzhou afforded our first real glimpse of China, and it was eye opening. Fuzhou is a shining example of the incredible growth that China has undergone. We all were astounded by the number of construction cranes, looming large over dilapidated buildings. Street level is fascinating, a ballet of mopeds, pedestrians, and cars, moving in rhythm, with no regard for rules, traffic lanes or threat of death.
Team Third Angle has had the great fortune to be a part of the Oregon trade mission to Asia, joining the delegation for these events in Fuzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. Governor Kulongoski unfortunately was unable to attend due to illness (thankfully he's expected to recover fully). In his place is state treasurer Ted Wheeler, an extremely nice, thoughtful, generous person who has been extremely well received here by the government and business folk.
We've been so lucky....our inclusion with the trade mission has given us entre to first class service. From the fantastic hotel to banquets and tours of ancient sites, our time in Fuzhou has been splendid. It's not just from the government and business folks, who clearly also have a business interest in extending the red carpet. It's everyone, the folks who are constantly waving at our tour buses, the school kids who are eager to practice their english with us, downright giddy at hearing us read from comic strips.
There's much more to tell in the next post....protocol and sculpture gardens! Need to pack for a morning flight to Shanghai....
