Consigned to labor during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Chen Yi continues to draw on her experiences in her rural homeland, her subsequent training as one of the first students at China's Central Conservatory of Music and her life as a composer based in the U.S. Third Angle, an ensemble based in Portland, Ore., infuses the works with passion and commitment."
