The late Marvin Hamlisch left the world behind with a lot of great music, for which we may all be grateful. He performed three times with the St. Louis Symphony, the first in 1982. By that time he'd already won a Tony, an Oscar and the Pulitzer Prize. He was not yet 40 years old. In his last appearance on the Powell Hall stage, in 2000, he was conductor for a "Search for a Star" competition. On the list of contestants was St. Louis soprano Marlissa Hudson, who played a memorable Black History Month concert a season or so ago.
Before the Tony, the Oscar and the Pulitzer and all the other awards and accolades, Hamlisch toured as pianist and one-man chorus to Groucho Marx, when the legendary comedian performed a show of jokes, songs and reminiscences late in his life. You might be able to hear Hamlisch singing along with Groucho to the profound lyrics of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" somewhere on the wonderful wide world web.
