Martha Argerich plays Prokofiev & Tchaikovsky

For many years, Martha Argerich has been one of my great favorite interpreters of the piano literature. Her playing of Bach and Mozart, as well as Rachmaninov and Ravel are – in my view – simply outstanding.

On this DVD we get to hear her in the following:

Prokofiev:

  • Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26

Recorded at Fairfield Hall, Croydon, 3 May 1977
Performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by André Previn

Tchaikovsky:

  • Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23

Recorded at Guild Hall, Preston, 6 February 1977
Performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Charles Groves

  • Performed by Martha Argerich (piano)

This recording presents two unreleased performances filmed by BBC television in 1977: Pianist Martha Argerich plays the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

Both pieces are very demanding and prove to be an ideal vehicle for Argerich’s musical capabilities, demonstrating why she is one of the world’s leading pianists.

She is joined by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Charles Groves, and by André Previn.

Here is Ms. Argerich in the opening concert of the 1980 Chopin competition, playing the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1

And now we go forward more than 30 years to October, 2010, to hear Ms. Argerich play the Prokofiev third concerto:
