One of the powerful moments for me personally at the League’s National Conference two weeks ago in Dallas was the opening presentation on how labor and management came together at the Ford Motor Company, by Jimmy Settles, Jr. of the United Auto Workers and Marty Mulloy of Ford. What I found truly inspiring was the distance the two organizations travelled—from frequent strikes, picketers being beaten up, near-bankruptcy, and the loss of $50 billion over five years to highly respectful, cooperative, and collaborative work leading to a far healthier company.
