To play with the Ensemble intercontemporain is like stepping into a playground of perfection. While the execution of the music is the ultimate goal, the musicians all the while manage to retain their sense of individuality and personal freedom. In a traditional orchestral setting, some players tend to slip into the comfort of being hidden within a section and thus play with only enough energy to survive. In contrast, the musicians of the Ensemble intercontemporain play with unbridled confidence and seem to consistently remember the ecstatic nature of music which brought us here in the first place.
As for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY musicians who were given the honor to play with such an ensemble, I think we are unanimously in awe of the group’s enthusiasm and the way Boulez’ vision for “Pli selon pli” is coming into shape. The Lucerne performance was indeed wonderful. As with any piece of music, however, there is never an ending point, and the details and subtlety of the music are continuing to unravel, progressing towards the full realization of Boulez’ intentions. I can only imagine how this evolution will continue throughout the remainder of the rehearsals and I anxiously await our first performances in Italy and beyond.
