The Chamber Classics finale will happen tomorrow, Sunday May 6th at 2:30 at the Bijou Theatre. Music of Schubert, Schubert and more Schubert will be performed– the Piano Trio in E?, op. 100; the Overture in the Italian Style, and the Unfinished Symphony.
Maestro Richman has identified the Trio as a personal desert island piece. He was in line to be the pianist for this performance, but after three months of working on it, he decided that it might no longer be a desert island piece after he was through with it. So pianist Kevin Class was recruited to play with Gabe Lefkowitz and I, and the rest is history. The tunes are permanently lodged in my head in a good way and the two symphonic works on the second half contrast nicely with the trio, giving a good overview of Schubert’s style as it evolved through his way-too-short life.

Also coming to a close will be the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association’s 2011-2012 season. On Monday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m., the five branches of the Association will give a free concert at the Tennessee Theatre. In the absence of Erin Archer, who is a new mother of triplets, the Preludium Orchestra will be led by Kathy Hart-Reilly, performing Courtly Dance and Procession by Brian Balmages and Fanfare for a Celebration by Robert Longfield. Katie Hutchinson’s Philharmonia ensemble will bring the Scherzo from Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D Major, Dreamer's Farewell by Robert Kerr, and American Gaelic by Shirl Jae Atwell. Look for a special presentation involving this group, also.
Ms Hart-Reilly will again appear, this time in front of the Sinfonia orchestra. All Russian composers will be the feature here, with arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave and Gliere’s Russian Sailor's Dance, and a folk song entitled Bayushki Bayu. Wesley Baldwin’s awesome Chamber Orchestra will perform Sibelius’ Romanze in C, and two movements from Mozart’s Symphony No. 23. (Kathy emailed me that one of the movements is called "Abdabtino." I think she meant "Andantino." On the other hand, maybe I should change my name to "Abdy!")
The Youth Orchestra proper will bring the evening to a close with four works; Farandole from L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 by Bizet, Overture to Poet and Peasant by Franz von Suppe, the Preludium from Grieg’s Holberg Suite, and the Overture to West Side Story by Bernstein. Come see and hear the future of classical music and support our very talented youth!
