Schumann: Cello Concerto

Ophelie Gaillard’s first recording of the Bach cello suites was really excellent, a virtuosic performance of a youthful Bach, a Bach as energetic and creative as the performer herself.

Schumann’s Cello Concerto was regarded as a minor achievement for many years. As is often the case, it is thanks to great performers such as the legendary cellist Pablo Casals, for whom Schumann’s Cello Concerto was “one of the finest works one could wish to hear – sublime music from beginning to end”, that this work now at last has its rightful place in the Cello repertoire.

In addition to the Schumann, Ophélie Gaillard has chosen five pieces for cello and piano by Liszt for this CD: two were originally songs with piano accompaniment written in Liszt’s youth; the other three pieces, dating from the end of Liszt’s life, show the soberness and bold language that characterize his late works.
