BACH: Partita No.5 BWV 829 KYOKO SOEJIMA, pianoBolton Theater (Cleveland Playhouse) 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition 256 kbs mp3 (no transcoding)
The Russian-trained Japanese pianist Kyoko Soejima (Moscow Conservatory) did not get very far in the competition, but her performance of Bach's 5th Partita struck me as 'one of a kind'. Soejima's tone in that performance is so subtly sophisticated that it was only during the Sarabanda movement that I realized how she kept adjusting shades of color throughout the piece. The following Minuetto was simply striking: Soejima played it with (what sounded to me like) the damping pedal depressed and with sharp finger strokes, producing a most unusual and attractive leathery sonority unlike any I ever heard in a piano performance of Bach's music. She seems to have a very special affinity for Bach's music, and even though her performances of other composers (Mozart, Chopin) were disappointing, she certainly earned a very sweet spot in my heart for those exquisite 15 minutes of Bach.
