Lewis Carroll published “Through the Looking Glass” in December of 1871. It contained, among other things, the poem The Walrus and the Carpenter which is remembered, oddly enough, not for its first verse, but for the famous 11th verse which starts:
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings-- ..
