Ricardo Morales, the principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, is spending this week as a guest principal with the New York Philharmonic. Since the retirement of its longtime first clarinet player, Stanley Drucker, the Philharmonic has been searching for a replacement. Auditions yielded no results, so it has been inviting prominent players to sit in as guests to see if there is a fit. Mr. Morales joined Philadelphia in 2003 after a stint as a principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, which he joined at 21. The departure of Mr. Morales would be a blow as the Philadelphians are working their way past a leadership vacuum and severe financial problems.
