Many of the Symphony musicians have already checked Mahler 3 as one of their most anticipated concerts of the 12-13 season (October 5-6, 2012). The performance of the Third Symphony will feature the phenomenal mezzo-soprano Susan Graham with Women of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. David Robertson said of the matching of soloist and symphony: "Susan
Graham sings the fourth movement, the dark night of the soul with text by
Nietzsche. It comes at a still point in the piece, a perfect blending of voice
as an instrument and orchestra. It uses words, but what the voice conveys is
much deeper than the words themselves."
I've been listening to Mahler 3 lately, and then found this line from a poem by Jack Gilbert that resonated. I'm sending this out especially to our Chorus Director, Amy Kaiser:
"Stronger, she said to the choir, not louder."
