Richter plays Schubert and Beethoven

These are wonderful performances of Schubert and Beethoven by one of the most highly regarded pianists of the 20th century. The Schubert miniatures were recorded at the legendary Sofia concert of 1958, and the sonata and bagatelles are studio recordings.

Sviatoslav Richter was a Soviet pianist well known for the depth of his interpretations, amazing virtuoso technique, and vast repertoire. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He lived from March 20, 1915 to August 1, 1997

While one likely turns to Richter for the great larger masterpieces of the piano literature, such as the Appasionata sonata, or the Waldstein sonata of Beethoven, this recording is refreshing is that the only sonata included is the Schubert A-Minor sonata, D845.
