Just to drop several lines after the premiere of La muette de Portici at the Opéra Comique in Paris.
This opera is basically unknown and the idea to revive it was commendable.
I'll try to explain more tomorrow why it was a tricky thing to have it on the program and why this opera --that Wagner apparently loved (and after you see it you can understand why)-- still spurs controversies.
 | | Phenomenal Elena Borgogni, Maestro Davin, and the brilliant Michael Spyres |
I knew that after a superb Carmen she produced a few years ago at La Scala, Emma Dante was capable to put up a good show, but I still feared the libretto and the topics of La muette de Portici were just too tough.
Now, after the premiere, I am happy to say that the show was remarkable, that Emma Dante found clever, stylish and elegant ways to get around numerous difficulties in the libretto, and with her crew they brought this opera to life.
The protagonist of this opera is a mute girl (from the village called Portici), danced in this show by a phenomenal Elena Borgogni. Michael Spyres managed to sing unsingable and was truly superb tonight!
So after the catastrophic Faust, dreadful Manon, appalling Forza del Destino, atrocious Cerisaie, insipid Don Pasquale, tragically shabby Amadis de Gaule, the things are improving and after some good elements in Orlando Paladino, Paris finally gets a good new production. Grazie Emma et al!
More tomorrow! Cheers
