What to Know About This Weekend's Summerfest Concert: Swan Lake at Symphony Lake
Conrad Tao, our soloist for the evening, age 16, will join the North Carolina Symphony for Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23--which Lang Lang recently performed with the North Carolina Symphony as well! The definition of a child prodigy--Tao's natural inclination for the piano was initially recognized at 18 months when he began learning nursery songs by ear on the family piano. Since then, Tao has gone on to perform with several professional orchestras around the globe and to further capitalize on his musical ability, Tao is an award-winning composer and violinist. Currently, Tao is enrolled at Juilliard's Pre-College Division studying piano under Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky and also studies composition with Yale's Christopher Theofanidis.
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky represents the sole composer for this weekend's program, which will feature repertoire from some of your very favorite Tchaikovsky works, including Sleeping Beauty, Eugene Onegin, and music from Tchaikovsky's ballet, Swan Lake. The same Russian folk story serves as the basis for the recent Oscar-winning film, The Black Swan!
Picnic of the Week. This weekend is warming up with some hot competition for our weekly Picnic of the Week contest. For your chance at ultimate bragging rights, fame and fortune--come early to the performance for the opportunity to be selected by our roaming judge and bring beer and or wine for some added summer-spirits. Winners will be awarded $100 to Whole Foods and two honorable mentions will earn $20 gift cards to Whole Foods as well. And rumor has it, our Picnic of the Week Judge will be accompanied by a special foodie guest...dress your table to impress!
