The spring theater season has officially begun, and a slew of highly anticipated musicals and plays, both brand-new and revisited, are set to bow. Broadway.com's Spring Preview series captures the stars bringing these stories center stage in the new season.


Frozen, the Broadway mounting of the smash-hit animated film, is getting ready to bow at the St. James Theatre. For the five years since the movie came out, fans have been dreaming about what this winter wonderland would look like live, and, of course, who will bring the beloved characters, Elsa and Anna, to glittering life on the stage. After a well-received run at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts last year, leading ladies Caissie Levy and Patti Murin are already drumming up a lot of buzz for their portrayals of these now iconic royal sisters. As we all know, Elsa and Anna are not your typical Disney princesses. With strong minds and valiant hearts, Frozen's royals are truly heroines. Here, Levy and Murin chat about their sisterly relationship onstage and off.

Katharine McPhee is bound for Broadway--and this time, it's for real. The star who gained legions of fans as Karen Cartwright on the Broadway-themed TV series Smash will make her official Great White Way debut in the lead role of Jenna in Waitress. McPhee will begin performances in the hit musical on April 10 for a limited engagement through June 17. Sara Bareilles, the show's Tony-nominated composer and current star, will play her final performance as planned on March 11.

McPhee first vaulted to fame on season five of American Idol. In addition to her acclaimed turn on Smash, McPhee's expansive screen résumé includes Scorpion, The Lost Wife of Robert Durst, It Could Be Worse and In My Dreams. She appeared on the Broadway stage in 2015 for the one-night concert Bombshell reuniting her fellow Smash stars at the Minskoff Theatre.

McPhee joins a Waitress cast that includes Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, Caitlin Houlahan as Dawn, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Becky, John Cullum as Joe, Benny Elledge as Cal, Joe Tippett as Earl and Christopher Fitzgerald as Ogie. Directed by Diane Paulus, Waitress began previews on March 25, 2016 and opened on April 24.

Broadway vet Harry Connick, Jr. will take on the role of Henry Gondorff, made famous by Paul Newman onscreen, in the upcoming musical adaptation of the 1973 film The Sting. The Broadway-aimed show will start at Paper Mill Playhouse on March 29.

The Sting will feature a book by Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone, the upcoming The Prom) and music and lyrics by Urinetown Tony Award winners Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis with Tony nominee Connick. As in the film, the score will also include music by Scott Joplin, including the famed composition "The Entertainer." John Rando, another Tony winner for Urinetown, will direct, with choreography by Tony winner Warren Carlyle (After Midnight, Hello, Dolly!).

"I am thrilled to return to the theater in The Sting--one of my favorite stories," said Connick. "I'm so excited to be working with Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis to create an original score as well as John Rando, Warren Carlyle and Bob Martin to develop this new stage musical. All of this--plus the classic piano sound of Scott Joplin--has got me fired up to sing and dance!"

Country music superstar Jennifer Nettles took Broadway by storm when she made her debut in 2015 as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford marked an early career achievement as a long-running Glinda in Broadway hit Wicked. We knew The Secret Garden was bound for the Great White Way, and now it's official! The first-ever Broadway revival of the acclaimed musical, The Secret Garden, will open next season. With book and lyrics by Tony Award winner Marsha Norman and music by Tony Award nominee Lucy Simon, The Secret Garden will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle. Casting, venue and dates will be announced at a later time.

First produced on Broadway in 1991, The Secret Garden ran for more than seven-hundred performances, snagging six Tony Award nominations and winning for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Daisy Egan) and Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

After 25 years, the production returned to the stage at Washington, D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company from November 15, 2017 through December 31, 2017. The tuner then played at the 5th Avenue Theatre from April 14, 2017 through May 6, 2017. Broadway alum Tam Mutu played Archibald Craven, the bitter uncle Mary Lennox, who was portrayed by Bea Corley, in the 5th Avenue Theatre production. Original Tony Award-winning star Daisy Eagan played the role of Martha.

Fresh off of the announcement of a Huey Lewis and the News musical being in development, the Old Globe has reported that Heart of Rock and Roll will have its world premiere at the San Diego theater as part of its 2018-2019 season. Performances are scheduled to run from September 6 through October 21. An official opening night will take place on September 14. Featuring a book by Jonathan Abrams and story by Tyler Mitchell and Jonathan Abrams, the musical will be directed by Gordon Greenberg.

With chart-topping songs such as "Hip to Be Square," "Do You Believe in Love," "Workin' for a Livin'," and "The Power of Love," Heart of Rock and Roll focuses on Bobby, a former rock singer who has traded in his guitar for a stable job in corporate America. He's on the verge of closing the ultimate business deal and winning the girl of his dreams (who also happens to be the CEO's daughter)--that is, if he doesn't jeopardize everything by reuniting with his band for another shot at rock-and-roll glory.

The gods have heard our prayers! We're starting our Friday turn-up right, which basically means that we are watching Alex Newell, Hailey Kilgore and the cast of Once On This Island absolutely rock the house on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night on repeat. The vibrant company performed the crazy infectious "Mama Will Provide," complete with Newell belting for the heavens. The inventive revival of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Once On This Island is playing at the Circle in the Square Theatre, and as previously reported, the cast album hits earbuds on February 23. The mind-blowing, face melting, nothin' but a good time musical Rock of Ages will return to the stage this fall with a tenth anniversary touring production. The Tony Award-nominated musical will hit the road starting October 2018 with an all new production. City stops and casting for the tour will be announced at a later date.

It's 1987 on Hollywood's Sunset Strip when a small-town girl meets a big city rocker. As they fall in love in L.A.'s most famous rock club, Rock of Ages allows fans to rock out once again to their favorite '80s hits.
