Did you know that Yo-Yo Ma performed an original work by the Nashville Symphony’s very own cellist Matt Walker? It happened last year, when the famed cellist played Matt’s duo “Yo-Yo Joe” with Toronto Symphony Orchestra principal cellist Joseph Johnson as an encore following an orchestra performance in Toronto. Click above to watch a video; this is a shortened version of the whole piece.

Now you have a chance to hear “Yo-Yo Joe” in its entirety when Matt performs the entire work with Sari De Leon-Reist on May 22 as part of ALIAS Chamber Ensemble’s Spring Concert. The sheet music will be available soon on Matt’s website.

Proceeds from ALIAS’ concert this week will benefit local nonprofit Moves & Grooves.

Nashville Symphony clarinestist Dan Lochrie loves his dog. He also loves East Nashville. He and three other Nashville Symphony musicians - double bassist Kevin Jablonski, pianist Bob Marler and cellist Xiao-Fan Zhang - are performing with the Eastwood Ensemble this Saturday.

Saturday’s performance, dubbed the Chamber Music Underground, is a rare occasion to hear chamber music in its original environment. This is the only ensemble in Nashville that performs in residential historic homes.

This is a fundraiser and celebration concert where 100% of the ticket funds will help to convert East Nashville’s community collaborative chamber ensemble The Eastwood Ensemble into an OFFICIAL non-profit organization! All musicians are volunteers and work with local artists and businesses of all sorts to enhance the neighborhood.

Saturday, May 18, at 7 p.m.

Dan moved to East Nashville before it was fashionable and never looked back. He enjoys walking his black lab, Carmen, driving around with the convertible top down, and hanging out in local restaurants and coffee houses with friends. Carmen loves visiting the Shelby Dog Park and having treats and baths at Wags and Whiskers. Dan is especially looking forward to playing music with friends for local charities in the neighborhood.

Look what just showed up on our Instagram feed -

“When I learned that our soprano soloist has the same last name as the brand of reeds I use, I had to get her to sign one! Thanks Yulia!

Fun fact: It’s the reed I used for the Szymanowski Violin Concerto last January. Too old to be played anymore, but a good place for an autograph.”
