Dowland: Art Of Melancholy [Iestyn Davies, Thomas Dunford] [Hyperion: CDA68007], CD, amazon.co.uk

The Art of Melancholy — Dowland: Lute Songs, CD, amazon.com

Of all English songwriters, John Dowland has enjoyed the most powerful afterlife, his voice unmistakably present in any version of his songs. The preeminent marriage of music and poetry, the nuanced shades of wit and melancholy and the extraordinary writing for both lute and voice all combine to proclaim Dowland as the father of English song. Countertenor Iestyn Davies has gained international fame through his operatic performances and recordings. Hearing him in this intimate musical setting is a revelation – as is the playing of the young lutenist Thomas Dunford.

Zachary Woolfe writes:

The rarest thing in opera is a distinctive voice, and Iestyn Davies has one. It's clear, full and plangent, with crisp diction and unassuming eloquence. (These are qualities the young lutenist Thomas Dunford has, too.) Mr. Davies saves the best for last on this disc of Dowland songs: a wrenching rendition of "Now, oh now I needs must part."

San Diego Opera has decided to close down since it does not see a way to continue putting on opera with top-level international stars in lavish productions. I, for one, don’t care whether productions are lavish so long as they are not dreadful. Also, in today’s opera world the top-level international stars are, with a few exceptions, not any more interesting than the singers one would encounter in a second-rate provincial opera company in the United States. So seeing up-and-coming singers in smaller theatres is not necessarily less desirable than attending performances at a house like the Met.

In other words, the San Diego Opera model does not really make sense today. Why spend big money to bring in the singers with high-level careers when they are seldom any better than less expensive local singers?
