Every time I enter the Royal Opera House I go see this photo. I like to spend a few moments there at the end of the performance, after every body else leaves. It's a thing of mine. I noticed that the photos atound it changed in time, but this is always there, in that precise place.
Next visit at ROH, in July. Looking forward!
Have a nice weekend!

This article is different from most of the other interviews because of the twinning of the quotations with a very documented text on Angela Gheorghiu's career. I noticed the elegance of the tone and of the phrases. From beginning to end it builds up an aura around the artist, proving how difficult but rewarding being part of the world of music can be, showing how hard it is to get among the best and even harder to stay there for more than twenty years.
The story starts like this: You don't need to read a lot about Angela Gheorghiu or talk too much to her to realize how luxurious her life is. And I'm not talking about the stages she has been performing on, about her fees, about the value of her personal brand or other material goods. In the world of opera, being yourself is a price you have to pay. It's a luxury. Her elder colleagues were saying that after careers of tens of years they were not able to stand against conductors or directors, preferring to cry and suffer in the loneliness of their dressing rooms.
Read the entire piece by Sorana Savu in the printed version of Forbes magazine, out now at news stands in Romania.

It was a special evening for me at the Royal Festival Hall because I heard Giuse alfin il momento (Le Nozze di Figaro), Tu che le vanita (Don Calro), Suzel bon di (L'amico Fritz) and O nume tutelar (La Vestale) for the first time live. My favorite? Hard to say. I live every second, each note enters my head and buzzes through the body. I enjoy everything with such a pleasure that sometimes the arias seem too short. But if I were to sum up, there were two moments when I forgot to breathe, during O nume tutelar and later on during O mio babbino caro. They were so intense, so emotional, with long, beautiful phrases. Still dreaming about those moments... The reaction of the audience was similar to mine. I noticed the complete silence. No one moved or turned pages or talked anymore. And all the energy received from the stage returned at the end of the aria in loud, endless applauses.  There were four encores, standing ovations and cheers and I would have liked everything to start all over again. It did, in my head, the entire night. At the signing session after the concert there was a loooong queue. It lasted for more than one hour, lots of enthusiastic fans willing to say something nice, to have the program signed and a photo taken with Angela. Speaking of the program, it was one of the nicest I saw so far, as you can see in the photos below.
Program Mozart - Le Nozze di Figaro - Ouverture Mozart - Le Nozze di Figaro - Giunse alfin il momento..Deh, vieni, non tardar (Angela Gheorghiu) Verdi - La Traviata - Parigi, o cara (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilincai) Puccini - Tosca - Lucevan le stelle (Teodor Ilincai) Mascagni - Cavaleria rustivana - Intermezzo Verdi - Don Carlo - Tu che le vanita (Angela Gheorghiu) Gounod - Romeo et Juliete - Va! je t'ai perdonne... Nuit d'hymenee (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilintai)
Bizet - L'Arlesienne Suite No 2 - Farandole Mascagni - L'Amico Fritz - Suzel, bon di (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilincai) Massenet - Cherubin - Aubade: Vive amour (Angela Gheorghiu) Puccini - Turandot - Nessun dorma (Teodor Ilincai) Tchaikovsky - Eugene Onegin - Polonaise Spontini - La Vestale - O nume tutelar (Angela Gheorghiu) Puccini - La Boheme - O soave fanciulla (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilincai)
Encores Tosti - A vucchella (Angela Gheorghiu) Puccini - Gianni Schicchi - O mio babbino caro (Angela Gheorghiu) Be my love (Teodor Ilincai) Non ti scordar di me (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilincai) Lara - Granada (Angela Gheorghiu, Teodor Ilincai)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Tiberiu Soare, conductor
You'll excuse me now. I'll go back to my fluffy white cloud. I got down only to tell you these few words. Oh, yes. Photos coming soon!

Already posted in BBC iPlayer, the interview will be available there for 6 more days.

Sean Rafferty's conversation with Angela Gheorghiu starts at 1:21:00. Little bits on choosing roles, about La Rondine, about future plans When I'm free for the next period I'll try to do Don Carlo, Otello, Manon Lescaut and..all the rest. Taking it step by step, I'm looking forward to listening to Tu che le vanita on Friday evening at Royal Festival Hall.
The dialogue is spiced up with Il bel sogno di Doretta, Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix and Sempre libera
Enjoy!

For the performances in September online booking opens four months ahead. Very good news as normally we can just apply and hope we get tickets. Which doesn't happen all the time.
Top priced tickets for Tosca at Staatsoper Vienna on September 5, 8, 11 and 15, starring Angela Gheorghiu, Marcelo Alvarez and Zeljko Lucic under Marco Armiliato's baton. An all star cast that deservers the fight for a good ticket.
So, if you want to go on September 5, the online booking opens on May 5. If you want to go on September 8, the online booking opens on May 8. And so on.
If you don't get a ticket, no worries. All you need is lots of patience to stand in the daily queue, maybe the most demanding daily queue at any opera house. As you know, once you get in line early in the morning you can't leave it for more than 15 minutes. The good part is that you can have some of the best standing seats in the house for only 5 euro or so. Been there, done that. Exhausting but rewarding. There are about 400 standing tickets every day, so there's plenty of space for everybody.
As hint, there's a very good view (and sound) from the gallery and the tickets are cheaper. I once tried the gallery standing tickets. Not that bad, but there's a side view which might be uncomfortable. Still, you're inside the opera house.
If you intend to attend La Boheme in December or Adriana Lecouvreur in March/April, then preorder tickets. The online booking opens only two months before each performance and there are high chances that you'll find only the most expensive tickets.
